Thanks to generous sponsorship from Rosie Bevan, I have started work on an index of the feet of fines of the reign of Henry VIII (1509-1547). This is a draft index of personal and place-names for counties with no published editions, on the same lines as the additional Kent index I compiled earlier in the year. The names are being transcribed as they appear in the documents, though normally with abbreviations extended, so it will be essential to use wildcards and/or soundex matching when searching, in order to allow for spelling variations. I hope to add modern place-names in the future. So far the index covers 2,332 feet of fines from the counties of Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cornwall, Dorset and Sussex (with strays from Cumberland and Durham). The way in which the documents are catalogued makes it difficult to estimate the total number, but evidently there was a marked increase in the use of final concords during the reign of Henry VIII, and there are probably more than 10,000 to be indexed in total.
