This roll, JUST 2/110, contains various writs concerning outlawry, inquests from four villages, inquests into deaths in the prison at Northampton castle, and the appeals of approvers. The roll is in generally good condition. Some of the content is translated in Selden Society volume IX.
In writs concerning outlawry the King commanded that a person or persons should be exacted (charged) with a felony and that if they did not appear at court then they were to be outlawed. This is usually followed by the sheriff's response (answer) that the person was charged on several occasions and that if they failed to appear then they were outlawed or if they did surrender that they were in custody.
Where a person confessed that they were a felon, the person (the probator/approver) effectively turned King's evidence and appealed (ie, accused) others of assisting them in their crimes. In the index therefore where it says 'He appeals...' or 'He also appeals...' this means that the probator was accusing others of assisting them in their crimes. Note however that it was not always clear to this indexer who was appealing whom hence referral to the source is always advised.

16 Ed2 | Moulton | Spelho hundred inquest: William de la Hide in the parish of Olneye took refuge in the church at Multon the 9th November 1322 and confessed he stole a russet tunic in Brixworth. He abjured the realm and was assigned to the port of Dover. He had no chattels and the tunic was worth 20 pence for which the vill of Multone responds. (Possibly Olney in Bucks or the deserted village of Onley in Northants). | |

16 Ed2 | Ecton | John Capoun de Eketon | Aunfordesho hundred, inquest. John died in his house after confessing and partaking of communion. He had wounds to the head and body. At noon, John Capoun, Adam Wynne de Eketon and Richard de Hangendehouton, Roger Cambard de Hangendehoughton came from Northampton to Eketon and in the street in the fields of Northampton between Northampton and Abingdon a dispute arose in a place called le Wold. Adam struck John on the head with a sword and Richard struck him in the neck and head with a hachet called a sparch and Roger struck him with a staff. Adam, Richard and Roger gave John 11 wounds to the head and body which killed him. They fled and had no chattels? The sword was worth 12 pence, the hachet 4 pence and the staff a half penny. Roger de Eketon was the first finder and he produced pledges from Walter de Beggeworth de Eketon & William Leman of the same. Hanging Houghton. |

The body was viewed by John le Waydour and Walter de Pateshull coroners. An inquest found that he died of hunger, thirst and privation. The colt was valued at 3 shillings for which John de Seymor de Herdwyk sheriff and constable of the castle responds. |

The wound went to the brain and he died. |
