Volume 12, part 1, page 110 (as modified by volume 14):
JOHN DE
SOMERY m. Hawise, sis. and h. of Gervase, and da.
of Ralph PAYNEL [see PAYNELL] who had inherited the barony of William FitzAnsculph.
John d. before Gervase. Hawise surv. him, and m.,
2ndly, Roger DE BERKELEY.(g)
Note g:
Dugdale, Mon., vol. v, p. 204.
As Hawise's subsequent husband Roger Berkeley was living in 1196/7, he could not have been Roger IV de Berkeley of Dursley (d. 1190), as has sometimes been stated [e.g. Sanders, English Baronies, p. 113, Keats-Rohan, Domesday Descendants, p. 321]. He is identified by John Smyth of Nibley as the son and heir of Nicholas, the son of Robert Fitz Harding [Lives of the Berkeleys, vol. 1, p. 46].
