Volume 9, pages 260 and 262:
He [Robert de Mortimer (d. 1219)] m., in 1210, Margaret, widow of Hugh DE FERRIÈRES, and da. and h. of Hugh DE SAY, by Mabel, da. of Robert MARMION, both abovementioned.
...
HUGH DE MORTIMER, s. and h., was an infant at his father's death and in 1230 his custody was granted to Henry de Trublevill.

Ian Mortimer suggests that Robert had an earlier marriage, and by it a son and heir also named Robert. Robert's father, on his marriage, had been given Little Woodham and probably Amberden, both in Essex, and Robert was holding these in 1212 (see page 258, note j). In 1232-3 Little Woodham and Amberden were held by another Robert, but both these manors later passed to the Mortimers of Richard's Castle. In 1254, Amberden was held by Hugh, the son of Robert (d. 1219), suggesting that the Robert who had held in 1232-3 was dead without issue by then [The Medieval Mortimer Family: An outline lineage, citing Book of Fees, volume 2, page 1464 and Calendar of Patent Rolls, 1247-58, page 330].
