Some corrections and additions to the Complete Peerage: Volume 2: Beauchamp of Somerset (PROPOSED CORRECTIONS)

BEAUCHAMP (of Somerset)

Volume 2, page 50, note a:
He [John de Meriet, only child and heir of Eleanor - the 2nd and younger sister of John (Beauchamp), Lord Beauchamp (d. 1361) - by her only husband, Sir John de Meriet, senior], who was knighted, m. three times, and d. 26 July 1391, leaving an only child Elizabeth, b. 13 Dec. 1386 (betrothed to Urry Seymour), who d. s.p., aged about 15, when the issue of her grandmother Eleanor Beauchamp became extinct.

Elizabeth was certainly still living 23 October 1395, when Sir William Bonevill had a grant of the lands late of John Meryet during Elizabeth's minority, together with her marriage [Calendar of Patent Rolls, 1391-6, p. 635]. The information in the text implies that she survived until about 1401, but in two documents, dated 20 December 1395 and 13 November 1396, Elizabeth, the wife of Sir Humphrey Stafford, and Margaret, the wife of Sir William Bonville, are described as cousins and heirs of Sir John de Meriet (d. 1391) [Somersetshire Archaeological and Natural History Society Proceedings, vol. 28, pp. 164, 165 (1882)]. This description seems to imply that Sir John's daughter Elizabeth was dead by 20 December 1395.
