Volume 5, page 393, note d (as modified by volume 14):
Alan
[Sir Alan fitz Brian of Bedale (killed c. 1267)]
was s. and h. of Brian fitz Alan (living 17 July
1242), who married Alice, da. of Gilbert Hansard, of Evenwood and Hurworth-On-Tees,
co. Durham ... Brian
was s. and h. of Alan fitz Brian (who died before Michaelmas 1189), by (----), Lady of
Bainton, one of the four sisters and coheirs of Geoffrey Haget, and da. of Bertram
Haget, both of Wighill, Bainton, and Healaugh, co. York ...
Alan was s. and h. of Brian fitz Alan, living 1242.
See also C.T. Clay, "Origins of the FitzAlans of Bedale", Yorks. Arch. Soc. J.,
vol. xxx, 1931, pp. 281-90; Early Yorks. Families, Yorks Arch. Soc., Rec. Ser.,
vol. 135, 1973, p. 27.
Volume 14 deleted the incorrect identification of the earliest Brian as a brother of Conan, Duke of Brittany, but still described him as Brian fitz Alan and added "living 1242". In fact his father's name was Scolland [Clay, Early Yorkshire Charters, volume 5, page 201], and the 1242 date evidently arose out of confusion with his grandson Brian fitz Alan (cf. the text above).
[This error was pointed out by Richard Borthwick in June 1999; the question was further discussed by
Cris Nash and Kay Allen. Tim Powys-Lybbe pointed out the remaining error over the name of Brian's father.
