Some corrections and additions to the Complete Peerage: Volume 3: Cauntelo
CAUNTELO
Volume 3, page 113, as corrected in volume 14:
He [Nicholas de Cauntelo, Lord Cauntelo (d. 1355)]
m., 2ndly, Joan, widow of Sir William DE KYME,
of Kyme, co. Lincoln [LORD KYME] (who d. shortly before 25 Mar. 1337/8),
and da. of Sir Humphrey de Littlebury. ... he d. 31 July 1355. ...
His widow d. s.p.,
16 Oct. 1362.
There are several additions to this account:
- Sir William de Kyme died 21 March 1338
(see Kyme, volume 7, pages 355, 356).
-
Nicholas and Joan were married in or about early 1341. In a
petition to the Pope, requesting a dispensation to continue as man and wife,
they stated that they had married two years previously,
not knowing that they were related in the fourth degree. It was ordered that the petition be granted, subject to
the facts being as stated, 25 February 1342/3 [Calendar of Papal Registers,
Petitions 1342-1419, p.14].
- Apparently both Nicholas and Joan were buried in the Cantilupe chapel in Lincoln
Cathedral. In the 17th century one tomb bearing the effigy of a knight and the arms of
Cauntelo, and another with a mutilated inscription to Joan the wife of Nicholas ... were
recorded there [R. Sanderson, Lincoln Cathedral. An exact copy of all the Ancient Monumental
Inscriptions ..., p. 6 (1851)].
[Douglas Richardson pointed out the evidence about the marriage in February 2002.
The other evidence was cited by G. W. Watson, Miscellanea Genealogica et Heraldica, 5th series, vol. 8, pp. 65-69 (1962).
