Some corrections and additions to the Complete Peerage: Volume 2: Beauchamp of Powick

BEAUCHAMP OF POWICK

Volume 2, pages 46, 47:
JOHN BEAUCHAMP, 3rd s. of Sir William B., of Powick, co. Worcester, and of Alcester, co. Warwick, (m. before Mar. 1414/5, and d. before 1431) by Catherine, da. and coh. of Sir Gerard UFFLETE.

Catherine's surname was "Usflete" or "Ousflete" (from Ousefleet, in the West Riding of Yorkshire).

[Douglas Richardson, in August 2002, provided evidence of her identity.]

Volume 2, page 47:
He [John Beauchamp, Baron Beauchamp of Powick (d.1475)] m. in or before 1434, Margaret, sister of Richard FERRARS.

Margaret was probably the daughter of Sir Edmund Ferrers of Chartley (d.1435). This Sir Edmund did have a younger son Richard Ferrers, who is mentioned in an indenture dated 19 May 1439, made by Sir Edmund's widow Ellen and her subsequent husband Sir Philip Chetwynd [Collections for a History of Staffordshire, vol.12 (1891), pp.314,315 (Chetwynd Cartulary, no 82); the same 3 sons of Ellen mentioned in this indenture are shown as "living 25 Nov. 1439" in the chart pedigree following p.334 of Complete Peerage, vol.5].

Support for this identification comes from the appearance of John Beauchamp, knight, as the first of three feoffees in the indenture of 1439 mentioned above, and also among the feoffees of William Ferrers, knight, heir of Edmund Ferrers, knight [i.e. the son and heir of Sir Edmund and Ellen], in a grant for which for which royal licence was given 5 March 1442 [Cal. Patent Rolls, 1441-6, p.52; this entry is indexed under William Ferrers, Lord of Groby, but from his identification as heir of Edmund, and also from the lands concerned, this is clearly an error].

[Douglas Richardson suggested this identification, in David Faris, Plantagenet Ancestry, pp.138, 216 (2nd edn, 1999).]
